Robin Roefs has returned to action after the FIFA World Cup, featuring for Sunderland in a 1-0 victory over Wrexham during the club's US tour. The Dutch international played 60 minutes and was pleased with both the result and the team's collective performance.
"It's good to be back with the boys," Roefs said. "I arrived last week and it was really good to see everyone again. Obviously I only played 60 minutes, but it was pleasing not to concede."
Squad Spirit and Building Momentum
The 23-year-old goalkeeper highlighted the strong atmosphere within Régis Le Bris' squad as they prepare for the 2026-27 campaign. "It's a good environment and everyone is so good with each other – we're enjoying our time together," he said. "Off the pitch it's fun, but on the pitch, we really work hard together and push each other."
With pre-season nearing its conclusion, Roefs expressed the squad's eagerness to return to competitive football. "We can't wait for the season to start now. After finishing last season like we did, we can't wait to be back out there," he added.
Support Across the Atlantic
Roefs acknowledged the strong backing from supporters during the US tour. "The support in the US was amazing, but it doesn't surprise me. We really feel that during the season and it's even more crazy to see so many over here. It's an honour to play for them."
Sunderland will conclude their pre-season schedule this weekend with a trip to France to face RC Lens at Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Saturday.
